People In Music History
Rimsky-Korsakov, Nikolay Andreyevich (1844-1908) Russian composer, also
conductor; member of the "nationalist" group of composers called The Mighty
Handful. In early life was naval officer, and picked up much of his musical
technique after being appointed professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory,
1871. His compositions usually have some literary or other extramusical idea
behind them and are distinguished by rich orchestration: he wrote a textbook on
orchestration with examples entirely from his own work. Wrote operas including
The Maid of Pskov, The Snow-Maiden, Sadko, Mozart and Salieri, The Legend of
Tsar Saltan, The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh, and The Golden
Cockerel (this last banned for its "seditious" satire until after his death).
Other works include 3 symphonies (no. 2, Antar), Russian Easter Festival
overture, suite Sheherazade, Spanish Caprice, piano concerto, folk song
arrangements. Also editor, orchestrator, and reviser (not always scrupulous by
modern standards) of other composers' works.
